Kyoto, Japan Magazine Editorial
Based off of one of the articles found at NYTimes.com, create a magazine editorial layout design. The design decisions should enhance readibility and have rhythm while utilizing a grid system. Photos must also be considered as well, keeping in mind a color scheme. For finer details, paying closer attention to hierarchy of type will help direct the eye. Repetition and consistency throughout the layout will then add unity.
The color scheme within the photos and text are bright and alluring, capturing the attention of the viewer. Additionally, the layout has a playful movement with the evident diagonals repeated throughout the design.
The starting point of the design stemed from the deckline, specifically focusing on the word “evovling”. Evolving means change and therefore I wanted to incorporate diagonals within the design. The diagonals were mimicked by the angle of the roof in the cover photo. From there, the photos were framed in a a way that incoporated the diagonals. To further accentuate the angle, thin graphic elements were added which also mimicked the stripes from the roof. Lastly, the text was then placed accordingly with consideration of alignment within each other and photos.
